Dairy Farming of the Czech Republic
Introduction
Dairy farming is one of the most important parts of the Czech agricultural industry. This tour will give us a unique opportunity to learn interesting information on the dairy production and to discover the most well-known sights in this beautiful Central European country. Technical visits and discussions will explain the situation in the Czech agriculture after joining the EU.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL, TRANSFER TO BRNO
- Arrival in Prague and meeting the ETOURS TRAVEL guide and coach driver at the airport;
- Transfer to Brno - the capital of Moravia;
A visit to a private dairy farm en route (60 dairy cows, 70 ha) - a captivating story of a smallholder who, after the Velvet Revolution, regained the property once confiscated by the communists and decided to continue his ancestors business with no experience at the beginning;
- Welcome dinner in a traditional Moravian restaurant;
- Overnight in a 3*+ hotel in the centre of Brno, 2 nights
Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It is rather industrious with huge textile, arms and most importantly engineering works including the renowned Zetor Factory. In spite of a nice historic centre with the impressive towers of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Spilberk Castle dominating the skyline of the city, only a few foreign visitors come here outside the annual trade fairs. However, this fact has advantages, too: visitors are welcomed here with genuine interest, and the pace of life is rather provincial, compared to that of Prague.
DAY 2: SOUTH MORAVIA
Technical visit to a dairy farm East of Brno - one of the best farms in the country; fully computerized; 450 Holstein cows with the average milk yield of 9,300 litres;
- Lunch in a 17th century chateau restaurant;
- Technical visit to a dairy - an important producer of liquid milk, yoghurt, butter and cheese;
- Tour of the Open Air Museum of Moravian Village in Straznice - an excellent opportunity to learn about the peasant life from the early 18th till the beginning of the 20th century;
- Transfer to Mikulov - dinner, folklore music and wine tasting in a local wine cellar with unrepeatable atmosphere; all drinks included;
- Back to Brno for overnight;
Mikulov is a little town situated in the middle of the wine-producing region. It has been a border post for centuries hence the narrow streets and the siege mentality of the architecture. The town is dominated by the massive Baroque castle of the princess Dietrichstein, Late Gothic parish church of St. Wenceslas, Jewish cemetery and Trinity Column in the main square, surrounded by splendid Renaissance houses.
DAY 3: MORAVIA - PRAGUE
- Technical visit to a large dairy cooperative near Austerlitz: 3,100 ha agricultural land, 900 dairy Holstein cows;
- Average annual milk yield of 8900 litres;
- During the tour, we will visit the Austerlitz battle field (the famous Battle of Three Emperors where Napoleon won a glorious triumph in 1805).
- Transfer to Prague after lunch;
- Visit to a large private farm of an English investor en route (issues concerning the possibilities of foreign investments in the Czech agriculture may be discussed here);
- Dinner in the outstanding Novomestsky Brewery restaurant in Prague, beer tasting;
- Overnight in a 3-star hotel in the centre of Prague - 2 nights.
DAY 4: PRAGUE
Meeting and disscussion with a representative of the Czech Ministry of Agriculture and Czech Dairy Union. Topic - presentation of Czech Agriculture in general terms, dairy farming and the situation after joining the EU; the meeting rooml, technical equipment and caffe break incl.;
Lunch at the spot;
Sightseeing tour of the city of Prague including all the major sights;
Farewell dinner - cruise with music on the Vltava River.
Prague is undoubtedly one of the oldest, most beautiful and architecturally most diverse cities in Europe. The "Golden Prague", the "Mother of Cities" or "Hundred-Spire City" are some of the nicknames that visitors amazed by this charming place use when trying to describe it. Since it has never been bombed, the city boasts a great number of well preserved historic sights representing almost all architectonic styles ever invented by mankind. Prague is the stately Prague Castle, the 14th century Charles Bridge, St. Nicholas Church or the interplay of shapes, the winding streets of the Old Town, the Astronomical Clock with 12 apostles showing up every hour, the Lesser Quarter with its majestic palaces and many many more.
