Birds and Bears Tour
- Excellent close-up views of bears
- Other large mammals
- Enigmatic forest owls and woodpeckers
- Short distances
The tour begins and ends at Poprad, which affords the shortest possible transfer times. Both the hotels we use are set amidst coniferous forests with some open areas, where sedentary passerines and those from Scandinavia should be easy to see in the mornings. These may include Nutcracker, Ring Ouzel, Crested Tit, Crossbill, Firecrest, Northern Grey Shrike and possibly Waxwing and Brambling. The landscape is very mountainous throughout with many conifers, pastures and hay meadows. Black Grouse is best seen at peat bogs. We hope to take a lift to the alpine zone and also will see some nice beech forests and may stop at a large lake for migrating waterfowl and terns. An extensive bird list for this tour is unlikely, but the quality of forest birdwatching will be determined by local woodpeckers and owls.
