Birds of the Czech Republic - tour in detail
DAY 1
PRAGUE to SUMAVA MOUNTAINSOn arrival in Prague, we will transfer immediately south to the first of our two hotels, situated in the Sumava National park area. The second hotel will be in the town of Trebon.
DAY 2 - 5
SUMAVA MOUNTAINS and TREBON BASINWhilst there will only be four days to reveal the birdlife in Southern Bohemia it is at a time when many migrants are still on passage. We will also concentrate fully on sedentary birds.
This holiday takes place in two most interesting areas – the Sumava Mountains and the Trebon basin. With mountains bordering nearby Germany, some parts of Sumava National Park (Bohemian forest) have been closed to visitors for nearly fifty years. Forested hills hide large moors, meadows and mountain streams and sometimes remind us of the taiga far to the north. Ural Owl, wolf and successfully re-introduced Lynx can be found in this area.
The Sumava forests hold some abundant breeders like Black Stork, Nutcracker, Crested Tit, Firecrest and Ring Ouzel. Great Grey Shrikes breed in the open country.
Beautiful countryside, comfortable accommodation, famous Czech beer and exciting cultural monuments can add something really special to this holiday as we devote much time to relaxing and sightseeing.
Trebon and its surroundings, on the other hand, is situauted in a basin where beautiful ancient trees, medieval ponds and peat bogs are now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The birdlife is characterized by a number of species hard to see on a private trip without a local guide. We hope that he will be able to find the most sought after species, such as Tengmalm’s and Pygmy Owl, plus Black, White-backed and Tree-toed Woodpecker.
We will also spend one morning at a Black Grouse lek. Hazel Grouse, however, is more typically flushed from a forest track. Sea Eagles have well established breeding population in the pond areas, where we can also encounter Bearded and Penduline Tit, Bluethroat, Collared Flycatcher, Golden Oriole, Wryneck, Black and Red Kite, plus Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpecker.
Cultural monuments are as diverse as possible, ranging from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque, mainly in small towns and therefore easily enjoyed. We will visit and enjoy the old town of Cesky Krumlov, which is regarded only second to Prague, as the most beautiful town in the country.
DAY 6
TREBON to PRAGUE
We will return to Golden Prague, where you can prolong your stay if you wish. We will have some time to stop while travelling to the airport. There are several well preserved castles on our way and we can have a closer look at one of them.
