Introduction
The Republic of Macedonia (formerly part of Yugoslavia, capital Skopje) is a small country situated in the southern part of Balkan Peninsula. It's a natural bridge between east and west, north and south.
The majority of the population are the Macedonians, while the most numerous among the minorities are the Albanians, Turks and Serbs.
Thanks to its rich nature and culture heritage, Macedonia is often called the "Pearl of the Balkans."
Local people of all nationalities are very friendly and the country is safe for visitors. Our local guides are the coordinators of vulture conservation project.
Birding in Macedonia is extremely interesting, especially because the area is not yet fully explored. Our tour will help to explore birds in this beautiful and interesting region, full of scenic mountains, large lakes and extensive lowlands along the Vardar river.
Our target birds in Macedonia are mainly raptors:
Short Toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes), Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus), Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina), Imperial Eagle (A. Heliaca), Golden Eagle (A. Chrysaetos), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Lanner (F. Biarmicus)
We will participate in vulture conservation project.
Other targets species in Macedonia are:
- Both European pelicans: White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and Dalmatian Pelican (P. Crispus)
- Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator), Lesser Grey Shrike (L. Minor), Masked Shrike (L. Nubicus),
- Orphean Warbler (Sylvia hortensis)
- Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis), Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia)
- Black Eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica)
- Sombre Tit (Parus lugubris), Rock Nuthatch (Sitta neumayer)
