WOODPECKERS, OWLS & GROUSE

Slovakia is the country in which to see some of those ‘lifers’. With all of Europe’s woodpeckers present, late April is a good season to combine them with some of the scarcer forest owls. Pygmy, Tengmalm´s, Ural and Eagle Owl are not uncommon in the Carpathian forests. You can also look for some ‘harder to see’ species, including five eagle species, Saker, Wallcreeper, Hazel and Black Grouse. April is the key season for the latter two species. Moreover, we will double our chances for success by visiting two areas rich in our key birds.
