This walking discovery tour combines Bulgaria, northern Greece and the offbeat former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on a journey that delves into the past of ancient Macedonia – once the mighty all-conquering civilization of Alexander the Great – and contrasts it with the distinctly different culture of today. These are lands of mountains, abundant flora and fauna, traditional folk music and crafts, quaint mountain villages, deep-rooted tradition, and an old-world way of life. Every day we will meet extremely friendly local people; in Macedonia’s Pelister National Park we will be welcomed to a village with a water system built with donated funds from the United States. The tour offers a combination of Classical and Orthodox Christian heritage. A special highlight is the Macedonian UNESCO Heritage site Ohrid; a town that is one of the oldest continuing settlements in the world.
