BRIEF ITINERARY - WALKING TOUR - VIENNA TO PRAGUE
Day 1: Lednice-Valtice park
After meeting the guide(s) in Vienna, we take a scenic road through a delightfully folded landscape of Northern Austria scattered with old castles and covered with the curving lines of vineyards.
After a while, we cross the borders to the Czech Republic to set out for our first walk in the famous Lednice-Valtice park to admire, not only its natural beauties, but also a Baroque palace, a monumental Victory Arch, the magnificent St. Hubert’s Chapel and many more unexpected Romantic sights the Liechtenstein family have left behind. The climax of the walk is the Empire-style Border Château where we stay overnight.
Day 2: White Carpathian Mountains
This morning we are driven to a nearby open-air museum in Straznice. Having learned how the nobility lived the day before, now we have a chance to learn about the housing of common people living in the same period of time. We closely inspect the interior and exterior of picturesque wooden houses with thatched roofs, old wine cellars, a smithy or a water-powered sawmill. Afterwards, we wade though peaceful meadows of the White Carpathian Mountains, scattered with old oaks and abounding in a variety of orchids, lilies and irises. In the evening, we indulge ourselves in the tunes of traditional folklore music and enjoy a wine-tasting in a stylish wine cellar.
Day 3: Podyji National Park
We take a short walk in the gardens of the Neo-Gothic palace in Lednice with artificial lakes, exotic trees, imposing sights and herons and storks flying overhead. Then, we are driven to the Podyji National Park to discover the ruins of a once fearful Gothic New Castle, learn about its exciting history and to take a breathtaking view of the meanders of the river Dyje snaking in the valley beneath. After a short stop in Cizov where we take a closer look at the remains of the Iron Curtain reminding us of the infamous part of Czech history, we are driven directly to our next hotel in Telc.
Day 4: Telc and Trebon
We spend the morning in Telc, a splendid city boasting a fabulous square lined with Renaissance and Gothic buildings, which are attached with delightful gables. A local guide takes us through the enchanting chambers of the Renaissance palace displaying various collections of armors or hunting trophies. We are transferred to the Trebon Lake District to take a nice walk around Rozmberk, the largest of more than 300 lakes in the area. After a picnic lunch, we arrive at Trebon, a famous spa with some more well-preserved historical buildings. We see a notable Schwarzenberg Shrine and after a refreshing glass of beer in the local brewery, founded as early as 1379, we leave this place for Cesky Krumlov.
Day 5: Cesky Krumlov
Cesky Krumlov is a real gem among Czech cities ranking high on the UNESCO list for its unrepeatable medieval character, winding little streets and a number of well-preserved Renaissance and Gothic monuments.
Therefore, we enjoy the entire day here. In the morning, we take a guided tour of its extensive Renaissance palace, the second largest after the one in Prague, and visit a unique Baroque theater. The afternoon is free for each of us to walk the cobbled streets and absorb the atmosphere of bygone times, take a nap or to do some shopping. However, those who prefer physical activity have the option to climb a nearby hill and be rewarded with a beautiful view of the city from the bird’s eye perspective.
Day 6: Sumava National Park
After breakfast, we take a scenic road along the Moldau, the Czech national river, and share the joy and ease of the many canoeists on their summer cruise. After awhile, we arrive at the Cistercian Monastery in Vyssi Brod founded as early as 1259 and after we have inspected its voluminous library, venerable cloister walk or the majestic church, we set out for today’s walk, this time starting with the stations of the cross with a pictorial little church of Maria Rast at the summit. We enjoy the unrepeatable beauty of the Sumava National Park and before the driver gets us safely back to our hotel, we take a ferry across the Lipno, the largest dam lake in the Czech Republic.
Day 7: Prague
The morning finds us leaving Southern Bohemia for the one-hundred-spire city of Prague, generally considered the cultural center of Europe. During the city tour, we admire all the most renowned sights of this jewel among cities, including the world-renown Prague Castle, St. Nicolas Cathedral, the Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and many more. We learn the history and listen to interesting stories and ancient legends relating to this magical place and, in the evening, we meet for the last time at farewell dinner at a renowned restaurant offering a gorgeous view of the city by night.
Day 8: Departure
This is end of our tour. We are transferred to the airport for home-bound flights or leave you to explore this ravishing city for a couple of extra days.
